I believe that money can buy happiness, if you us some of it on financial therapy.
Not financial advice. Financial advice means nothing if you don’t have the right mindset. Financial independence is not enough either. Earning or amassing a certain amount of money won’t guarantee you happiness, but neither will a certain amount of poverty. Whether you have money or not you have the option to choose happiness. So if you have the choice which one would you choose; happiness with money or happiness without? Studies have shown that money adds to your overall life satisfaction. Without money you may have to refrain from certain activities, sacrifice to do them, or wait for the right time.
The level of happiness doesn’t raise much after about $75,000 annual income. But your level of life satisfaction does. This is because happiness is achieved when you do not have to worry about basic needs. When you are able to be yourself and when you are proud of yourself. The problem is many rich people stop at being able to afford basic needs and forget to explore self-pride and peace of mind. True happiness is experienced through the environment and the mindset. It is both internal and external. But don’t mistake acceptance for happiness.
You may accept your circumstances and decide that you just need to bare them because things aren’t changing, this is not true happiness, this is true surrender. When acceptance leads to surrendering the door to happiness opens. The next step however is action. If you do not move through the door you may not experience happiness.
I also believe that one of the first steps you have to take in becoming happy is to define your idea of prosperity. Prosperity means different things to different people. Usually, prosperity has a monetary component and an esoteric and existential component. The idea may be hard to describe in words because it is a feeling and not a place.
Because of this believe in prosperity I discovered that there are three things that make up prosperity and they are power, peace, and pleasure. When you create these three things in your life you begin to have the life you dream of. Learning how to navigate the money cycle along with this “3P” discovery you find happiness. These two life lessons are what make up financial therapy.
In my private practice I go through exercises and activities with patients to help them define and create these ideas and learn these life lessons. The process can take anywhere from four to twelve one-on-one sessions and can add a level of value to life that people find incredibly therapeutic and empowering.
The first step is knowing your idea of prosperity. One finds this answer by knowing how you want to show up in the word. Money doesn’t make you evil or greedy unless you already are. Money doesn’t make you generous and giving, unless you already are. Simply put, money makes you more of who you are. So if you are unhappy and you get more money you will then become more unhappy. Get it?
After patients become aware of their overall idea of prosperity we break this idea into three parts, power, peace, and pleasure. The work is determining what makes you feel powerful, what brings you peace, and understanding the different pleasures in life. Life satisfaction doesn’t come from money only. It is a combination of the love we receive, the pride that love gives you, the things you achieve, the gratitude you feel, and the purpose you serve. All of these things lead back to power, peace, and pleasure.
A typical financial therapy session last about 90-minutes and cost anywhere from $145-$250. That cost may sound expensive to you or it could should extremely low depending on your money believes and your current budget. The biggest misconception is that financial therapy is for poor people. As stated money alone can’t by happiness so wealthy people and poor people need financial therapy alike. Brain-Based Financial Therapy is a theory that I create combining cognitive behavioral therapy, existential therapy, and hypnotherapy.
